Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
Matthew 12: 31 - 32 AMP
Saints, during my Bible study this morning, I came across a scripture in the Gospel of Matthew where our Lord Jesus Christ said that all sins and blasphemies we commit will be forgiven, except for the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will not be forgiven.
This scripture disturbed my spirit for a while because it seemed to conflict with our Lord's teachings about forgiving and pardoning all sins. Why was this the one and only exception?
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.
Matthew 9:6 KJV
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
Mark 2:10 KJV
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
Luke 5:24 KJV
In the Mouth of Two or Three Witnesses
In Christian theology, there is a principle based on biblical law that states, "In the mouth of two or three witnesses, every matter shall be established."
This concept emphasizes the importance of corroboration and verification within Scripture. Essentially, it means that if a particular doctrine or teaching is to be considered sound and true, it should be supported by at least two or three passages from different parts of the Bible.
This principle helps ensure that interpretations are not based on isolated verses but are consistent with the overall message of Scripture.
Using this principle, I decided to search other parts of Scripture to see if our Lord Jesus said the same thing in other Gospels. To my amazement, I discovered that He did.
This realization gave me goosebumps. The very idea that there is a sin that God says He will not forgive instilled a profound sense of holy fear in my spirit.
Truly and solemnly I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever abusive and blasphemous things they utter;
But whoever speaks abusively against or maliciously misrepresents the Holy Spirit can never get forgiveness, but is guilty of and is in the grasp of an everlasting trespass.
Mark 3: 28-29 AMP
And everyone who makes a statement or speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit [that is, whoever intentionally comes short of the reverence due the Holy Spirit], it will not be forgiven him [for him there is no forgiveness].
Luke 12: 10 AMP
What does it Mean to Blaspheme the Holy Spirit?
I needed further understanding of what it means to blaspheme the Holy Spirit. So, I applied the theological principle of examining the context in which something is said. I looked into the context and the events that led to Jesus making this statement.
Let's observe it together.
Then a blind and dumb man under the power of a demon was brought to Jesus, and He cured him, so that the blind and dumb man both spoke and saw.
And all the [crowds of] people were stunned with bewildered wonder and said, This cannot be the Son of David, can it?
But the Pharisees, hearing it, said, This Man drives out demons only by and with the help of Beelzebub, the prince of demons.
And knowing their thoughts, He said to them, Any kingdom that is divided against itself is being brought to desolation and laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will last or continue to stand.
And if Satan drives out Satan, he has become divided against himself and disunified; how then will his kingdom last or continue to stand?
And if I drive out the demons by [help of] Beelzebub, by whose [help] do your sons drive them out? For this reason they shall be your judges.
But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out the demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you [before you expected it].Or how can a person go into a strong man's house and carry off his goods (the entire equipment of his house) without first binding the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house.
Or how can a person go into a strong man's house and carry off his goods (the entire equipment of his house) without first binding the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. He who is not with Me [definitely on My side] is against Me, and he who does not [definitely] gather with Me and for My side scatters.
Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy (every evil, abusive, injurious speaking, or indignity against sacred things) can be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the [Holy] Spirit shall not and cannot be forgiven.
And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Spirit, the Holy One, will not be forgiven, either in this world and age or in the world and age to come.
Mathew 12: 22 - 32 AMP Bible
First, the Greek word for blaspheme as used in this scripture in Strong's Concordance in the Greek means:
Greek: βλασφημία
Transliteration: blasphēmia
Pronunciation: blas-fay-me'-ah
Definition: From G989; vilification (especially against God): - blasphemy evil speaking railing.
KJV Usage: blasphemy (16x), railing (2x), evil speaking (1x).
In this scripture, our Lord Jesus healed a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute. The people of Israel were amazed and began to wonder if Jesus could be the Son of David, a messianic title.
However, the Pharisees accused Jesus of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons. In response, Jesus points out the absurdity of their accusation by explaining that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand.
He then explains that if He casts out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon them. He then proceeds to warns them that attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to Satan is a grave sin.
From this context in this scripture, we can see that blaspheming the Holy Spirit involves a willful and persistent attribution of the work of the Holy Spirit to evil/the devil.
It is a deliberate and hardened rejection of the Holy Spirit's testimony about Christ and His redemptive work. This rejection is considered unforgivable because it represents a conscious and definitive refusal to accept God's grace and forgiveness.
Saints, blaspheming the Holy Spirit is not just an isolated act but a continual and resolute stance against the truth and work of the Holy Spirit. This is why it is deemed the one sin that cannot be forgiven, as it closes the door to the very means by which forgiveness is offered.
We need to understand the seriousness of this sin and the profound consequences of rejecting the Holy Spirit's testimony about Christ. I hope this serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of recognizing and honoring the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
A Call to Salvation
Precious one, if you have not yet accepted our Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, now is the time to open your heart to His love and grace.
Our Lord Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners and to offer eternal life to all who believe in Him. He died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day, conquering death and providing a way for us to be reconciled with God our Father.
To receive this gift of salvation, you need to acknowledge your sin, repent, and place your faith in Jesus Christ. Pray this sincerely from your heart:
Lord Jesus, I confess that I am a sinner in need of Your forgiveness.
I believe that You died for my sins and rose again, offering me eternal life. I repent of my sins and ask You to come into my heart as my Lord and Savior.
Please fill me with Your Holy Spirit and guide me in Your truth. Thank You for Your love, mercy, and grace in Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Thank you Jesus, I love you Jesus.
