This morning, as I woke up, I realized it's August 1st, the start of a new month. Nothing unusual. However, a thought soon followed. For non-humans, you know the tree, dog and other creatures, today is just another day, no different from yesterday.
But it's different for us; our days have context. They're framed based on the past. What happened before can linger into the present, and potentially extend past into the future. In other words, there is continuity. In this context. everything progresses forward, unlike the movie "Groundhog Day" where Bill Murray is stuck on reliving the same day over and over.
This means we exist not in a vacuum. What comes before us matters. Ask Kamala Harris, the current Democratic Party nominee front runner. When she woke up on the 22nd of July, President Biden had announced to withdraw from re-election the night before, her day had dramatically changed, as the result.
Or, how about Katie Ledecky, the gold medal winner in the 1,500-meter freestyle last night in Paris, She now has the honor of tying the record for "most medals won by a female American Olympian of any sport" according to the New York Times. And she is not even done with her events yet.
So, on that note, I best get myself out the bed and start moving.
How was your day today?
