The Washington County Office of Emergency Management announced the installation of a second Maryland Mesonet weather monitoring station in Clear Spring, joining the first station in Keedysville.
A mesonet (mesoscale network) is a network of automated weather observing infrastructure designed to provide detailed, real-time meteorological data. The system transfers data wirelessly to a central server, displays it on a user-friendly website with visualizations, maps, charts, and archives, and disseminates it to stakeholders.
This expansion is part of the Maryland Mesonet, a collaborative project between the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM), the University of Maryland, the Maryland Environmental Service (MES), the National Weather Service (NWS), and other State agencies to develop and operate a world-class atmospheric monitoring system to deliver reliable, timely information to residents and enhance critical public safety decision-making.

Each station typically measures various parameters, such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, rainfall intensity and amount, soil moisture and temperature, snow depth, solar radiation, and other relevant meteorological variables.
The Maryland Mesonet provides state and local emergency management officials with data and analysis to enhance public safety, reduce community risk, and apply for disaster relief programs. It also supports agricultural, economic, and transportation operations.
