Pew Research Fact Sheet on Importance of Diversity in Courts

By Sarah Sample on July 22, 2024

Pew study shows ensuring courts reflect the diversity of a community is a strong indicator of more equitable outcomes and increased public trust.

Pew Research has hundreds of articles and studies that seek to promote effective, modern systems that enable justice that will better serve communities as part of their Court and Communities research sector. One recent article in particular discusses strategies for increasing diversity within the judiciary to better reflect the communities they serve. As state and local courts hear more than 95% of all cases filed in the United States, they are essentially dealing with matters that directly affect the safety, well-being, and stability of millions of residents across the country.

While Maryland historically gets high marks for diversity within the system, the article highlights why that matters so much for ensuring a fair and inclusive justice systems. Key points include the benefits of diverse perspectives in decision-making, challenges in achieving diversity, and recommendations such as targeted recruitment efforts and reforming selection processes.
