To wit, Hawaii is pummeled by a storm called Kona low. The State Governor has issued a weather emergency on Wednesday stating "heavy and sustained rainfall is expected . . . through the weekend into the next week . . . posing a significant risk of flooding, landslides and associated impacts." The proclamation also includes putting its National Guard on alert.
Kona low is an extratropical cyclone that occurs in the Hawaiian Islands two to three times a year during the winter months between October and April. It can linger for weeks with a varying levels of impacts including heavy snows on the higher mountains. Hard to believe I know. And this storm is a late comer with an anticipated bang.
I suspect that climate instability has something to do with it. It is making these types of extreme events more severe and frequent. On the other hand, given the Hawaiian's "aloha" spirit, it may be a good news for the local surfing community - make lemonade when life hands you lemons.
