I pray before I ride with driver ed students for safe travel to and from picking them. I pray for safety with them. I prayer of praise for safe drives occur afterwards. Little did I know how that pray on Thursday would come out.
Our kitchen stove has knobs that have always been the type that can accidentally screw off due to the brand. They also can accidentally be turned on while cleaning them. On Thursday I left to ride with two students about 1 p.m. I didn't know that I had knocked a knob half on when I was wiping down the stove. I was away from home until a little after 7 p.m.
On the way home I was hoping my husband would arrive after me so that I could put dinner in the oven. However, this day he got home before me. He said in a matter-of-factorial tone, "you almost blew up the house".
"What?! I left the gas on?"
"Yep." Surprisingly, he was not mad or condemning. He told me he walked in the house and was hit by a wall of gas. So, much so that it took his breath away. He ran in, turned the gas off, and opened all the windows. He had been there about an hour by the time I got there. I could see a light haze in the air in the house.
I thank God for saving us. A number of scenarios flashed through my brain. The first one, I got home before him as normal. This particular day my sinus were not working; so I would not have smelled the gas. If for some reason my breath wasn't taken away or if I didn't notice the haze, I would have put the prepared for the oven meal in the oven and then I wouldn't be typing this. The second one, is my husband created a spark when opening the door and he wouldn't be here. Third, something else in the house created a spark while both of us were not there and only our house wouldn't be here. Thanks only to God the furnace didn't draw any heat through the house. Wow! Our world and anything planned would be totally changed by any of these three scenarios let alone our neighbors who could have suffered any damages or injuries.
I am praising God for His divine protection even though we did not deserve it. My heart is racing now just typing this days later. God is not done with us yet and has a plan that we have yet to learn. It would have been great to be in his arms, but not yet.
What has God protected us from because His purpose for our existence has not yet been fulfilled?
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 (DIV).
