According to a 2024 report from the annual County Health Rankings (CHR), Montgomery County, Frederick County, and Howard County are some of the
healthiest counties in the United States.
The 2024 report focuses on the connection between civic participation and health, which is called civic health. It highlights the importance of civic infrastructure and spaces to connect and be informed, focusing on access to local news, broadband internet, and public libraries. It calls attention to structural barriers like policies, laws, and practices that can create obstacles to participation in voting and worker unionizing.
The CHR, a collaboration of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, annually compares counties within each state on more than 30 factors that impact health. The factors include social determinants such as education, jobs, housing, exercise, and commuting times. Based on these parameters, Montgomery, Frederick, and Howard counties came out on top for Maryland and the entire United States.
