The Dallas Police Department announces overall violent street crime decreases more than 13% in 2023.

While violent crime is rising in many large American cities, it continues to trend downward in the city of Dallas.

In May of 2021, the Dallas Police Department implemented its Violent Crime Reduction Strategic Plan, using short, mid, and long-term strategies to fight violent crime and the crime-related conditions that come with it.

In 2023, overall violent street crime is down 13.79 % citywide from 2022.

Aggravated Assaults were down 17.3% from 2022.
Robberies were down 7.7% from 2022.
Murder was up 14.95% in 2023.

The Department recognizes one life is too many. Looking further into the homicide data and to determine what more can be done to prevent this violent crime, the Department determined nearly 2/3 of the murders happened inside a residence or at an apartment complex. More than 70 percent of the victims were involved in criminal activity or high-risk behavior, and in a majority of the cases suspects and victims were known to one another.

We must continue to do our best to take the criminal element off our streets but must also recognize we need to do more to invest in people and places, and work collectively with our community to offer a more positive path for individuals who otherwise would be involved in crime. We will ensure our Focused Deterrence continues to be as robust as possible.

In addition to the declining overall violent crime numbers, shooting violent crime offenses (murder, aggravated assault, robbery, and discharge firearm) went down 20.99% in the city from 2022.
There were 1,548 fewer victims of violent crimes from 2022.

In 2020, before Dallas Police implemented its Violent Crime Reduction Strategic Plan, violent crime was trending upward.

Started in May of 2021, the Crime Plan uses short, mid, and long-term strategies to fight violent crime and the crime-related conditions that come with it.

Violent crime is down 23.78% compared to the end of 2020, with 3,018 fewer victims of violent crime.

Chief Eddie Garcia said, "There are still challenges ahead and there is still work to be done, but a decrease in violent crime overall is positive step towards creating a safer Dallas. This decrease is the result of hard work by the men and women of the Dallas Police Department, and the amazing partnership we have with of our criminologists, the backing of our city leaders, the community, and businesses."

The Crime Reduction Plan, developed by the Dallas Police Department, University of Texas-San Antonio criminology and criminal justice professors Drs. Michael Smith and Rob Tillyer, and the City of Dallas, uses evidence-based strategies including hot spot policing, placed network investigations and focused deterrence.

In hot spot policing, DPD increased police visibility at micro locations (330'x330' grids) where data showed the most violent crime in the city was concentrated.

Now in its second year, the Crime Plan will continue with hot spot policing and will also continue to implement more placed network investigations and increased focused deterrence.

With PNI, Dallas Police will still focus on eliminating the criminal element in grids, including gang and narcotics activity, to safeguard the individuals who live in those communities and improve quality of life.

With focused deterrence, the long-term component of the plan to change culture and violent crime behavior, Dallas Police will work with city departments, clergy, businesses. This component will also work to provide resources to the community like jobs, education and assisting with social issues.
