I read two pieces this week that reveal how the UK conservatives are sinking even lower. This is not meant to say UK liberals are a day at the beach, but it troubles me that conservatives have put in place two of the worst PMs in British history (think Liz Truss and Boris Johnson), currently have a highly criticized PM in Rushi Sunak and advocated more openly for Brexit which has been unwise even before it happened.
The first piece was an op-ed piece by Johnson who strongly advocated Donald Trump for US president. Fortunately, Johnson has as much credibility as Trump which is not meant as a compliment. My guess is most in the UK will just laugh at Johnson's piece given its author and chosen subject. I have long felt Johnson liked Trump as it made him look better by comparison.
The second piece was about UK conservatives welcoming a Trump 2.0. A strong America benefits the UK and vice-versa. Trump had actually politicked for Brexit as he wanted to swoop in afterwards and make a great trade deal to look good. It was in keeping with his lack of interest and understanding in multi-lateral agreements and desire for bi-lateral ones. Plus, Trump has a disdain for anything he was not involved in - he hates it when Barack Obama is given credit for actions, eg.
To me, anyone advocating a Trump White House is supporting a weaker America. There are some global leaders who indeed want that, but our main allies should not want that, at least in my humble view.
