Many of us feel incomplete and often look to others or things for a sense of self. There are so many methods for finding ourselves that we often get confused, and instead of uncovering our true selves, we move further away from our true core. We turn to indulges like overeating, stimulants like alcohol or drugs, dramatic relationships, or a series of mini-dramas to feel alive. We don't consciously make detrimental choices but make them because we are disconnected. The further disconnected we get, the more unhappy and dissatisfied we become. Soon, we enter a vicious circle trying to seek relief. How did we get here? When did we turn away from our essence?
We might never know exactly how we lost touch with our true nature, vision, or dreams. Many of us no longer even recognize what our life goals are or even what we truly want. We have become mechanical just to live another day. When we do think of our dreams or goals, sometimes we panic. We feel nothing will ever change or improve.
The fact is, regardless of how old you are, change is possible. Breaking patterns and old routines is a real possibility. The key is to start. It doesn't have to be an elaborate or expensive process. But it does have to begin somewhere. The steps for change are available for anyone at any time. For starters, you need to start with some practical and realistic plans that include some of the following:
- Select an area that you want to improve.
- Keep your selection simple.
- Make a list of things to do and check them off when completed.
- Assign at least one to two tasks per day.
- Give yourself tons of time to complete goals.
- Assign mini-goals to your plans
- Begin with goals that are free or at least budget-friendly.
- Start today and avoid using the tomorrow excuse; the first day can be just writing a list.
- Keep a process and progress journal.
- Maintain a routine in accordance with your needs.
- Revise your plans as you achieve the mini goals.
- Avoid self-criticism.
- Stick to the routine to develop new and healthy habits (habits require reinforcements).
- Keep routines simply so they can become natural to do
- When routines seem dull, modify them slightly, but do not stop.
- Do something on your list regardless of how you feel, except on rest days.
- Do not allow your emotions to dictate your activities.
- Allow yourself a day to rest or goof off.
I would like to state that activities or plans are not necessarily the only thing that defines us as individuals but are valuable tools for putting us on track. In other words, you do not need to be busy daily to have a meaningful life.
