Tribute to the father of India's Green Revolution: MS Swaminathan
Renowned agricultural scientist and the "Father of India's Green Revolution", MS Swaminathan, died in Chennai at the age of 98. He had done groundbreaking research to agriculture and revolutionized food security in India which earned him global recognition.
His three daughters Soumya Swaminathan, Madhura Swaminathan, and Nitya Swaminathan have taken care of him.
Journey of Dr. Swaminathan:
The journey of Dr. MS Swaminathan as a plant geneticist has paved the way for the Green Revolution. This Green Revolution is a transformational era in Indian agriculture.
He became the world leader in the field of sustainable food security due to his advocacy for sustainable farming practices.
Career:
Dr Swaminathan had served as the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Agricultural Research and Education between 1972 and 1979.
He also chaired the National Commission on Farmers and played a crucial role in addressing farmer distress.
He was the Rajya Sabha member between 2007 and 2013 also.
Awards:
He received many prestigious awards such as:
The Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 1971
The inaugural World Food Prize in 1987
Government of India has honored him with the Padma Shri in 1967
He was also honored with Padma Bhushan in 1972
Padma Vibhushan in 1989
The commission's recommendations including setting a minimum selling price at least 50 per cent higher than the weighted average cost of products and was aimed at alleviating challenges faced by farmers.
Dr. Swaminathan at UNESCO:
Dr Swaminathan held the UNESCO Chair in Ecotechnology at the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai and worked to influence sustainable agricultural practices.
Recognition:
Time magazine was recognized Dr. Swaminathan as one of the most influential Asians of the 20th century.
NDTV honored Dr. Swaminathan as the Greatest Global Living Legend award in 2013.
