National Poet of India: Dinkar

The famous poet, essayist and patriot Shri Ramdhari Singh "Dinkar" was born this day on September 23, in 1908, in a poor family in Simariya village of Bihar's Begusarai district.

Dinkar was one of the most important modern Hindi poets in India. He was a poet of rebellion and revolution, as a consequence of his nationalist poetry written in the days before Indian independence. He has been hailed as a Rashtra Kavi (National Poet) on account of his inspiring patriotic compositions.

Dinkar's poetry was greatly influenced by Rabindranath Tagore, while his political thoughts were greatly shaped by both Mahatma Gandhi and Karl Marx. He is as popular and connected to poetry lovers for Hindi speakers as Alexander Pushkin is for Russians.

His famous works include Rashmirathi, Kurukshetra,  Parashuram ki Prateeksha, Hunkar, Sanskriti ke Char Adhyay, Renuka, Rasvanti and Urvashi.

He was very inspiring to read. His works are mostly of Veer Rasa (brave mode). His poetry was about reawakening and humanism. His socio-political satires aimed at inequalities and exploitation of the underprivileged.

Today, I shall delve into the intricacies of his poetic genius, focusing keenly on his profound exploration of the human aspects. Just see how he unveils the human dilemma:

रात यों कहने लगा मुझसे गगन का चाँद,

आदमी भी क्या अनोखा जीव होता है,

उलझने अपनी बना कर आप ही फँसता,

और फिर बेचैन हो जगता न सोता है...

(Last night the moon

of the sky was telling me,

human is

a very strange animal,

he himself creates problems

and gets stuck in them,

and then he become restless

and neither awakes nor sleeps...)

Now allow me to share one of his exquisite poems, a personal favorite of mine, followed by its English translation:

English translation

Holds No Meaning

When the inner turmoil has

shattered through life's struggles,

then getting the sea of happiness

holds no meaning...

When the crops wither

and turn to dust without rain,

then the upcoming showers

hold no meaning...

No matter what the relationship is,

if they don't stand by you in sorrow,

then those relationships in happiness

hold no meaning...

The moments of small joys

pass every day unnoticed,

then waiting for eternal happiness

holds no meaning...

When the mind is wounded by harsh words

and gets shattered from within,

then the subsequent sweet words

hold no meaning...

No matter how many comforts one has,

if the body is plagued by diseases,

then those countless facilities

hold no meaning...
