Lead anything and you'll pay for it. Fact. Oh yeah, you'll get all kinda freakin' magic benefits, none bigger and better than the sense of control that comes when "in charge." Don't be naive. Being in charge comes at a cost. Leadership costs…
First, you will pay a high price for making hard calls. It's your job, leader, to decide who stays and who goes. It's your job to decide when we go left and when right. You'll be wrong, if you're really good, just a lil bit less than right. The hardest calls? Letting go of those that brought you to the dance.
You will wreck peoples lives (or so it seems) for the good of the whole. You'll fire and never forget. You'll know why and die holding it in.
You will be loathed by those you love but had to leave. You will not be afforded the opportunity to explain. Again, you will have good reason, solid rationale, and it will not matter. You'll be cast as the world's biggest ASS for having the b&#$s to do what's best.
I love building leaders. I love dealing hard truth. I loathe being the bearer of bad news. I loathe knowing my council has dire consequences. I wish everyone knew my heart and how much it hurts me to make hard calls, especially with those I love. I wish it was possible to share complete truth with those left behind. It. Is. Not.
Leadership, done well, is not a power trip. It sucks. Hurts the heart. Leadership costs. You ready to pay the price?
Live hard. Love harder. Much harder…
