As part of our trip to Italy, we jumped on an express train and went to Napoli to see Herculaneum.
Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried during the Eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
It is famous as one of the ancient cities preserved intact. While it is less well-known than Pompeii. It was the first discovered Vesuvian city, found in 1709 (Pompeii was revealed in 1748 and identified in 1763). Herculaneum also has more wooden surviving objects due to the pyroclastic material that rained down.
Herculaneum is a fantastic site, with walls still vibrantly coloured from ancient times, complete paintings have survived in places.
For a long time, it was believed that everyone made it out of Herculaneum during the eruption, but then they uncovered the boathouses.
There is a lot still uncovered so there could easily be more we just haven't found yet.
I would recommend a visit to this amazing site if you can, but if you can't then the next best thing is available right here. This is not my video but one I have wanted a lot, a great channel for walking tours.
