Some faith traditions consider faith, hope and love to be the cardinal (chief, fundamental) virtues. If this is so, then the book of 1 Corinthians tells us that love is the greatest of the great.
"So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love." 1 Corinthians 13:13
The Christian community is to be characterized by love -- love for God, and for one another. A hymn that celebrates this love is Blest be the Tie that Binds. It was written in 1771 by John Fawcett, the pastor of a poor, struggling Baptist congregation. After seven years at the church, he was invited to serve a much larger congregation in London. He accepted the call but changed his mind when church members pleaded with him to stay. He wrote the hymn in commemoration of that decision.
