As summer, the hottest season of the year has started, we have started feeling thirsty again and again and make sure to drink cool water at home and office. We either keep an earthen pot filled with water or keep a water bottle in the fridge to get chilled water.
But we also have our feathered friends around us, who are busy nesting, feeding, singing and raising their young.
They usually fly and feed in the early morning and evening, when the air is cooler. In the afternoon, they spend more time resting quietly in the shade. They love to wade into the shallow water and splash around to cool off just as we do.
But the natural water sources dry up during the summer. They manage to manage food somehow, but they keep on wandering in search of water.
Many species of birds migrate during the warmer months to find a more suitable climate for nesting and raising their young.
But those that decide to live with and around us can be seen gathering in flocks or fluttering around in search of food and water.
At this time, if we keep a shallow bowl of water on the roof, terrace or balcony of our house in the morning and during the day, then it will certainly be a great service to those thirsty birds.
But one thing should always be kept in mind that when we keep water for birds on the roof or terrace there should be no place for cats to enter. If there is a possibility of cats coming from anywhere, then it should be closed. Otherwise, cats would prey on helpless birds.
During the summer, bird watching can be a fun and rewarding experience, and if it's possible on our own rooftop or terrace, without using visual enhancement equipment such as binoculars or telescope, it will be the icing on the cake.
