The used up but still loved piece of clothes

Every once in a while, I need to update my clothes due to normal wear and tear and it happens more often with my work clothes. Too many washings and dryings make fabrics pill or look faded which does not look very professional, so I need to dig in and purchase a few new tops and a pair of my best style of work pants. I am not one of those people who loves to spend money on clothes or shoes so it can be a real headache deciding on much to put into it. Now... when I love a piece of clothes and it is all worn down, possibly nearly dead from too many washes but it is tender soft on the skin... that I want to keep forever. In some instances, I find it really difficult to throw away that oversized pair of pajama shorts which are barely holding onto the elastic but feel like the softest cotton on my bottom when I wear them all around the house. Could I break them out in front of a possible boyfriend? Oh heck no. He would probably find it odd that I keep something so worn though I have had ex's who also kept an older shirt, so if I find the right guy, he might understand.
