Legend football player Pele passed away

The Brazil footballing legend and three-time World Cup winner, Pele has passed away at the age of 82. He had been widely considered to be football's first global superstar.

Brazil's all-time leading scorer Pele had been treated for colon cancer, following surgery to remove a tumour in September 2021. He had been shifted to hospital since November with multiple ailments.

He is seen as the best player to ever play the game with 77 goals in 92 international games.

The peerless, three-time World Cup champion personified the beautiful game, a sport filled with talent, quickness, and inventiveness.

Born: 23 October 1940

Pele made his international debut as a 17-year-old with a hat trick in the 1958 World Cup final. He took the leading position the charge of arguably the greatest team the world has ever seen, Brazil's world-dominating side of 1970.

He was one of the Brazil's golden generation including Nilton Santos, Didi, Garrincha, and Jairzinho, all of whom were among the best players of the time.

Club career:

Pele passed 18 years at Santos football club with holding the record for most goals scored for Santos.

He lead them in winning six league championships, including five straight in 1961, as well as two Copa Libertadores triumphs, widely regarded as South America's answer to the Champions League.

Retirement:

He took retirement from football in 1977 after finishing his playing career with the New York Cosmos. More than 75,000 people participated in New York's Giants Stadium for his (historic) final game, which was appropriately played against Santos, such was his influence in the US and the developing North American Soccer League.
