Introduction – National Statistics Day is observed every year on June 29th in India to spread awareness about the importance of statistics in daily life and the process of development and planning among common people. This national day is celebrated to acknowledge and 129th birth anniversary of famous statistician Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis for his invaluable contribution to the field of Statistics.
Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis was born on June 29, 1893, in West Bengal and is the founder of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). The Government of India celebrates this day to increase the use of statistics in daily life and sensitize the common people that how statistics helps to frame and shape policies. Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) organized the National Statistics Day in our country. It is important to note that World Statistics Day is celebrated annually on October 20 across the world in every 5 years.
History – Firstly, National Statistics Day is celebrated every year on June 29, 2007, to honor the popular statistician Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. This national day also celebrates the birth anniversary of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. The main aim of the Government of India is to celebrate this national day is to recognize the incredible contributions of Prof P.C. Mahalanobis that are made in the field of statistical development and economic planning.
Theme – The theme of National Statistics Day in the year 2022 is ''Data for Sustainable Development'', which highlight the importance of official statistics in national development.
Significance – There are several seminars, competitions, and discussions to highlight the importance of official statistics in national development that are based on a theme of national importance. Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MOSPI organized the event to celebrate this national day and the 129th birth anniversary of popular statistician Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis. Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis also introduced the ''Mahalanobis distance'' in the year 1936. Mahalanobis distance is a statistical formula that can be used in measuring the distance between a point and a distribution based on multiple dimension measurements.
