The defendant is accused of making a relevant, realistic, well researched and executed legal drama series which has been pulled off quite phenomenally by the cast as it doesn't come off as pushed, inauthentic and overdone (as with many indian series)
Does the defendant wish to plead guilty or not guilty?
Guilty!
Your honor, can I ask my learned friend, Why?
There are various reasons like,
- It's not like other legal dramas which address either the romantics around the cases instead of what happens at the actual hearings or its executed so poorly as it's nowhere near reality.
- It's thought provoking. It touched upon various important societal topics not only concerning the legal courts but even humane elements like communication, behaviour, acceptance, etc.
Every episode brought up a case of relevance like a case of - he said/she said concerning Rape, Consent, killing by gaming addiction(Blue whale challenge),
Cost of development in villages by installing water consuming plants, IVF and the backlash it faces along with how women employee or founder treated for their pregnancy, technological advancement(driverless cars) and its pro & cons, case of loopholes in law that help cover gender information racket, dating apps using bots to attract subscribers, and some more.
- It doesn't show that somehow the protagonist always finds a way to win a case.
- But the main reason?
it's connect.
The way it's told, it has the ability to reel in and let you figure it out for yourself what's right or wrong?
It doesn't just spoon-feed you that this is right, instead they showcase worthy arguments of both sides, describing repercussions of every decision.
It provided clear meaning of the charges being filed and in many cases informed the unaware like me of different ways and different charges that can be filed for a similar matter like in the case of classic he said/she said it informed of charge of section 376C (sexual intercourse by a person in authority).
Then the human element -
The way they communicate, it's not toxic and cringy, it feels quite smooth, relaxed like a feel-good drama.
Their friendship, how no matter what they come out in support of one another. There is no age-old ulterior motive drama or the hero/heroine getting cornered to break the truth and have to fight off goons, face kidnapping or save their life.
It's simple and realistic with a good touch of emotions that make you feel connected to the characters, especially the five - Kashaf(Shriya Pilgaonkar), Deepak(Varun Mitra), Shubhangi(Namrata Seth), Vandana(Sugandha Garg), Kitu(Deepak kalra). Directed by Shefali bhushan and Co-directed by Jayant digambar somalkar
It holds sarcastic and ironic moments as well like,
when in one episode shubhangi points out her dislike for producing colas as they consume so much of water, to which her client replies - that even liquor requires a great deal of water then why do you drink that?
It subtly points out the hypocrisy at various points in the series.
Two things in conclusion -
The character arc of Deepak hangs in the balance as, spoiler alert, the series ended on an abrupt note of honesty by him, disclosing his trick of leaking the rumor to scamtrail.
The intro song, which I loved, somehow feels similar to some other song which I can't recall and they even addressed this in this series - copyright infringement. They gave a good argument that is it a crime if a new song takes a 6 second tune and similar duration bits and pieces from other songs? As there are many songs that are inspired and derived from various Raag and can come off as similar because of the original raag.
Anyway just wanted to know if there's something there, so if you remember do leave a comment.
Do watch. It's another rare good Indian work like - Made in Heaven.
