We have all had days where we wake up and just don't feel like our usual happy selves. We'd rather hide from the world and stay protected in our bed all day.
Here are some techniques that can help you overcome this feeling.
• Practice mindfulness so you become more aware of what your needs and wants are.
• What does happiness mean to you? This is something that is unique to you. Think about what happiness will mean to your health, your thoughts and outlook on life. What would your daily life look like? What hobbies do you enjoy? How can you get closer to making your happy life? What is in your control to change?
• Only spend time and energy on the things that you can change.
• Gratitude. Look for the positives, enjoy and appreciate the simple things in life and let go of any negative feelings such as envy and jealousy.
• Have the same compassion for yourself as you do your best friend. Often we are really hard on ourselves. What compassionate things are you doing for yourself?
• Laugh. It makes you breathe deeper which helps to oxygenate the blood and it also releases endorphins.
• Set yourself goals. What small step can you take today to get you closer to where you want to be?
• Really take note of your thoughts. Every time you think a negative thought tell yourself to stop. The same with unhelpful habits such as stress eating, smoking).
• Look at your environment and think about your senses. What smells, sights, sounds, feelings make you happy? What can you do to integrate them into your space.
• Who do you spend time with? Are they positive people or do they drain you of energy?Happiness doesn't happen by accident. We need to choose habits that will promote it.
Remember that our emotions, thoughts, physical sensations and environment all impact our mood. What are you going to do today that will bring you close to being happier?
