The temperature has been, as is usual for March, all over the place around here. Last Saturday we experienced record highs (around 97°F/36°C). Since it was a dry heat, I decided to head downtown in the evening to take some photos of the first flowers I’ve seen this season. I took these with my trusty old Sony A7III and a crappy old Canon 50mm 1.8 FD with an FD-NEX adapter attached. I enjoy using adapted film lenses on digital cameras. Vintage lenses were engineered a little differently and so the way they render color is different from modern lenses made for digital lenses. I don’t mind the lack of sharpness, either. I think the sharpness of a lens is often overrated, and it seems like getting a tack sharp image seems to be a primary consideration for some photographers over getting a beautiful or emotional image. Sure, I got some sharper images with my 85mm Sony lens, but they didn’t appeal to me as much as these did. I plan to head out to find more flowers as Spring progresses. There is a window of time just before sunset when the flowers are perfectly backlit and the scene has a warm glow all over it. It doesn’t last long, though, so I have to be quick about getting the shots I’m looking for. Traveling in Books is free today.
