Every night, as we close our eyes, we cross from the world of the Known to the world of the Unknown, a world where the impossible becomes commonplace. Here, time can flow backwards, the dead can speak, and physics bends to the whims of an unseen storyteller. For millennia, humans have struggled to make sense of these nightly voyages into the inexplicable. These are our dreams, and they prompt eternal questions: Are they messages from beyond? Glimpses into our deepest psyche? Or something else entirely? Day and night, the Unknown surrounds the Known like animals prowling around your house, getting into garbage, flying into windows, howling at the moon. The Known ventures out cautiously, carrying its flashlight, speaking loudly enough to scare away what it doesn't understand. Every night, though, the Unknown creeps in and whispers strange stories in our sleep, leaving us to make sense of these messages in whatever way we can. There are several methods I know of interpreting dreams. Each has its advantages and disadvantages; one may appeal to you more than the others or be better suited for an individual dream than the others. Some provoke a kind of brand loyalty, akin to a religion. Let’s look at a famous dream from Genesis 41:1-7 and see what these methods make of it. It’s known as Pharaoh’s dream.
