TOPIC: THE SPIRIT SPEAKS (3)
TEXT: ACTS 13:2
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." NIV
The Holy spirit does not only speak to each one of God's children, but he also speaks in the gathering of believers. To give direction, to empower and commission unto the work of God, which is his will on earth.
This was the incident that took place in Acts 13:1-3. While they ministered unto the Lord in fasting, prayer and worship, the Holy spirit spoke. How did the gathering of prophets and teachers heard his voice? The medium by which the Holy spirit spoke was not specified, however, by the knowledge of God's word, he might have spoken to one of them or all of them knew in their spirit (through the voice of the Holy Spirit) what the Lord intends to do by commissioning Saul and Barnabas to the work of the gospel far beyond Antioch.
The focus here is that the Holy spirit speaks, and we can hear him. When we separate time to fellowship with him, in prayer, fasting and studying his words, we are subduing and submitting our body to be more conscious of his voice. It's like preparing the ground for sowing which will bring about harvest.
Either it is personally or corporately, the Holy Spirit desires to always unveil the will of God to the hearts of his children. He is more willing to speak than we are willing to hear. God always speaks by his Spirit. There is no obstruction to his ability to speak, however, there can be obstruction to our ability to hear, if we do not live a life that is conscious of his power and presence and, create time to fellowship with him.
Now is the time for fellowship, intimacy and deeper relationship with the Lord. It's the time to study more, pray more and fast often as the occasion calls. Remember, all these are not rituals to make God speak but are necessary for us, who are clothed in flesh to shift our attention and heart to hear and listen to what the spirit of the Lord is saying.
God cannot be cajoled to speak. He is a father whose delight is to speak with his children. When we live with the knowledge of our relationship and fellowship with him, it becomes easy for us to hear him, when he speaks.
PRAYER
Thank you, Father, because I am privileged to hear your voice when you speak. You have given me your spirit that I may walk in the light of your will and to always do that which is pleasing in your sight. Help me to give myself to fellowship with you in Jesus' name. Amen
