Matthew 14:27-31 – But Jesus spoke to them at once. "Don't be afraid," he said. "Take courage. I am here!" Then Peter called to him, "Lord, if it's really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water." "Yes, come," Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. "Save me, Lord!" he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. "You have so little faith," Jesus said. "Why did you doubt me?"
Fear of what's going to happen in the future. Is that which creates doubt? Even when we have our eyes so focused on Christ, it is so natural to look to the right and to the left and create the smallest doubt in our soul.
So, what is the answer to overcome fear and doubt? It's very simple; yet, it's so difficult. We are to keep our eyes on Christ and know that looking any other direction will lead us to doubt and fear. It is in that moment that we begin to sink.
I know on many occasions, I've read this passage and thought to myself, How could Peter have been so weak? But now, having lived 65 years, I realize it's natural. What's not natural is the supernatural power of Christ. As we walk on our path, almost every one of us will catch ourselves looking to the right or the left, only to find ourselves in doubt and with fear.
Only then can we overcome by refocusing and putting our eyes back on Christ.
The part I love about this passage is that even when Peter began to sink, he turned and refocused himself back on Christ who reached out and came to his rescue.
Today, embrace the fact that there is never a time that you can't look back to the Lord while you're on life's journey and refocus through the eyes of Christ.
Stay healthy and have a blessed day!
