I have always been a late riser. Growing up, I had no problem staying late into the night while studying, watching movies, volunteering at festivals, or partying.
I feel aging is wonderful in many ways, like being happy in my skin, taking "me" time, and learning to be in the moment. However, growing old has its disadvantages. Lack of sleep is the major one!
I tried reading while awake in the wee hours, hoping to lure my sleep. None of the numerous solutions I had adopted apart from taking unnecessary meds worked.
Then, one such "tossing and turning, having read for over 2 hours" kind of a night, I gave up. When I looked at the clock, it showed 4:45 am. Hmm…
Do I force myself to sleep somehow?
It is too early to get up.
But I am exhausted.
What do I do now?
Suddenly, it occurred to me…
Why not get up?
Do my prayers, meditation, and such till the first sign of dawn.
Then, without disturbing the rest of the family, go for a walk to the park?
Instead of my usual, late morning walk?
Why not?
So, I did just that!
As I neared the park, I watched spellbound at the sky full of vibrant colors, heralding the sun's arrival and then as the regal sun rose royally in its splendor!
The birds were slowly waking up on the pond or the grassy bank. All around, the walking trail was serene and peaceful. The small waves were lapping gently towards the bank. A few determined walkers were striding purposefully around the pond, respecting each other's space and tranquility. Some walkers smiled and wished a cheerful "good morning." I noticed a few people fishing leisurely.
During my daily morning walks, I am constantly amazed at the spectacular display nature puts on. No two sunrises are the same. Yet, each one is equally magnificent! Some days, I am lucky to spot a new bird, an animal, or vividly colored wildflowers. There are days when I watch with awe a baby bird or birds out on their first swimming lesson, carefully supervised by their mother. I saw a family of birds gliding together under the watchful eyes of a mama and papa bird encircling their young ones.
Now, even after years of walking around the pond, I can hardly wait to get to the park to marvel at what Mother Nature has in store and feel grateful.
