Trolls R Us

No real spoilers

Butch:

I got nothing. Hockey night last night. The trolls live another day. You guys got anything?

Loothound:

I played quite a bit, and I'm still regularly overcome by just how much time is spent on inventory management. If they could have figured out a Sort feature, or any kind of Select Multiple thing, they would have been way ahead of their time. Every item, to and from every character, every time. Got ahold of a Scroll Case and a Gem Bag finally, which helps for space, but it adds another level of management to the whole system. Also, I appreciate the work they put into the graphics visually but the visual interface/visual language/iconography of this game is really challenging. It is so hard to efficiently scan the inventory and mentally sort things. Long graphic designer rant lurks there, but I'm going to just tread lightly and leave it at that.

Krogan started getting squawky at me while I was doing the Hills things, so I promptly relieved him of all inessential loot. Awesome timing, too, because who should I meet but Valygar! A neutral-good ranger who's a much better fit than Krogan on many levels! Awesome ranged attack. Tiny bit of healing. Minsc and he are now absolute besties, which seems like it will add some variety to Minsc's chatter. Then, generally good progress.

I need to turn the difficulty back up next time, though. I'm feeling like the running is getting a bit TOO smooth.

Feminina:

Taking away people's good loot when they start to complain is KEY. "You can leave if you want, sir, but you're not taking these healing potions with you!"

And yeah, inventory management sucks in a lot of games, but it really especially sucks here. So time-consuming.

Butch:

Whenever you get annoyed at the inventory UI, just do what I do. Take a deep breath and repeat to yourself: "At least I'm not playing Horizon."

Valygar's a cool guy.

Loothound:

Ah, well I don't have that basis for comparison. Yeah, hoping so.

Butch:

Or Witcher 3. Remember needing that one specific flower, opening your inventory and seeing the whole damn florist shop?

"Now, which one was hoodleberry blossom? That one! No, that's oopleblossom flower…shit."

Feminina:

At least in Horizon you don't have this serious limitation on inventory slots, and you don't have to click and move things between the limited inventory slots of multiple people. I think this is worse.

Butch:

There is that. That is true.

Loothound:

Definitely. You're not just managing the inventory of one person, but up to six. Ugh, The Witcher. Flowers, and runes for your sword. Those were impossible to keep track of.

Feminina:

I love loot so much, and yet there are times I really appreciate a loot-free or loot-light game, where basically all you can pick up is ammunition for one of the three guns you can carry, or whatever. The simplicity of that experience is refreshing.

Although I do love loot.

Loothound:

All hail Loot! Also, agree.

Ah, Ghost of Tsushima. So light. So…elegant. Brilliant sword combat.

Ahem, YES. I love loot.

Butch:

You just have to get to the point where you cheerfully ignore most of it. I've been leaving so much behind and have my 20 grand!

Loothound:

Yep, me too. As soon as I finish up in these Hills, it's off to free Imoen.

Feminina:

I'm skeptical that dude can even help much. I'm fully expecting another 50 things we'll have to do along the way before we can actually get anywhere near her.

But we must take the lead we have.

Butch:

I should do that. That said, I have so much else to do. I haven't been to the windspear hills or trademeet, there's that planar sphere thing that looks interesting, I haven't been to the docks or the government district, and I kind of got this companion of mine sent to an extraplanar prison and I feel kind of bad about that. Should probably help him.

So much to do!

Loothound:

Yeah, that sphere thing is apparently related to Valgyar's personal quest, so I'll probably be there before long. Interesting story behind it, apparently…

Butch:

It would be kinda funny if there wasn't. Like, you open it and it's empty, or it has nothing but old advertisements for the circus.

Loothound:

Yeah, not likely though. Maybe it's just been taken over by a gang of Barghests.

Butch:

Probably more trolls. Game likes trolls.

Feminina:

I feel like at some point even this game has to say "come on, trolls again? We need some variety."

That's when the skeleton warriors show up.

Butch:

And the shadows.

So many trolls.

Loothound:

Wow, nothing on the Barghest thing? Oh, well.

It's the regeneration, I bet. Really makes them a pain in the butt. Or, maybe if we dig deep into the lore of Faerun we'll find out that there was a huge outbreak of trolls that followed the Time of Troubles or something.

Dude, bring on the undead beasties! Anomen has a kick-ass turn check, and I've barely seen any of the unlifed.

Butch:

Oh, don't worry. He'll get to use that check plenty. Because of course.

I always forget how monsters get really annoying when you get around level 9.

Feminina:

Turn Undead can be pretty handy. The annoying thing is that if it works you have undead running around and you have to chase them down, but that's obviously often better than having them charging at you. It would be TOO convenient if it just made them freeze in place.

Fear is similar. I don't want to be ungrateful when it gets someone off me for a minute, but when you're down to the last enemy and they're running around in a panic, sometimes I think "all right, stop being afraid and just come fight already."

I don't have much familiarity with barghests beyond the Cyberpunk soldiers, so I couldn't really think of anywhere to go with it.

Butch:

And I'm too tired for rational thought.

I did a thing the other night where I turned some undead and they ran to the other side of this big lava pit, so there they were, and I couldn't chase them without running through, you know, lava.

It took a while to deal with that.

Feminina:

Ha!

"We're scared! Let's hide on the other side of the lava!"

I mean, good move.

Loothound:

The Cyberpunk soldiers was the joke, but not a good one. Having their own little funland in an arena type thing in the middle of a city, etc. Frankly I was going for a sort of painful groan thing anyway.

Yeah, all the running around gets tiresome. If I know that I'm going to be resting after a fight, and I have any Dispel Magics left on the shelf, I usually just cheap out and negate the damn things. Don't think it'll work on turned undead, though. Now, if you can turn them and then somehow herd them into lava…lifehack!

Butch:

That was, ironically, my genius plan. "I shall use this hazard to my advantage!"

Maybe you'll be more genius than I was.

And of COURSE they were immune to arrows. Them over there all "Yeah, your weapon has no effect, bitch."

Loothound:

Not unless I can invent some sort of divine Tensa-barrier type contraption. That would be pretty awesome..
