In times of change we look for balance. It is a fleeting notion, because by its very nature, change cannot immediately bring balance as it overturns that which was. It is easy to talk about change, innovation and disruption as though they were a magnanimous force for which we are all cheering on. That just simply would not be so. Some change will be resisted to achieve the status quo.
When I began my freelance media work many years ago, I determined to make the motto, "Changing Media for a Changing World." And I have stayed true to that mantra as business, communications and international geopolitical predictions have materialized in real-time like the prognostications of Nostradamous. I have stayed true to the cause because while change is inevitable, the pace of change has been meteoric. We are witnessing the dinosaurs of media, politics, design, production and influence go extinct. It is turning into quite a battle royale--But this time, it's different.
Unfortunately, not everyone will embrace the changes that are coming. And some of those changes will be catastrophic. But like the contractions of a woman in labor, we all know something is coming. The world is entering a new phase. And that means equilibrium will not be possible where there once was stability.
When the champion boxer is KO'ed in 8 rounds, a new champion is ushured onto the stage and his arms are lifted in victory. The old chapter must fade to black. We live in a time of great uncertainty because new paradigms emerge.
The once proud olympics is a great example. Once the beacon of worldwide affinity, the tradition is being ripped apart in 2024 by geopolitical tensions, inequities to favored and unfavored nations, calls for boycott, as well as by domestic terror attacks. Paris has experienced cut fiber optic cables and arsons that shut down train service. Perhaps it is time to pass the baton of the Greek-Inspired Olympics to the annals of time, and move on to a new world sports event.
This year alone there have been assassinations, attempts, coup d'etats, election violence, protests, mass shootings, knife attacks, infrastructure sabotage, wars, missle strikes, rebel invaders and so much more. And these changes will be welcomed by some, fought by others and accepted by many. We must be ready for the world, and it starts with us.
The truth is that chaos will likely increase. And finding balance can become increasingly difficult. So , We will look at four ways to relax and keep balance in uncertain times:
1 Food
In stressful times, people often overeat or lose their appetite altogether. Those are two practices that are not recommended by health professionals. But often people forget that certain foods have calming or soothing qualities to help you get through the day. It is better to munch on or sip these in times of duress rather than go to eating extremes.
Foods: Sweet potato, avocado, salmon, blueberries, cashews, dark chocolate, turmeric, banana, plain yogurt, kale,
Tea/drinks: Kombucha, tumeric tea, green tea, matcha tea, camomile tea, basil tea
2 Meditation/Prayer
These activities have massive scientifically proven effects on the mind and moods. But essentially, meditation and prayer focuses the mind. Try focussing your mind on things that are good and not bad. Try not to fixate on calamities, disasters, bad feelings or tragedies. This does not mean bury your head in the sand about the realities of the world. Rather, it means do not fixate on unpleasant thoughts. The mind is a powerful incubator. Try thinking about solutions, rather than the problem itself. Don't ruminate too long on hoe a negative event made you feel. Create a positive mantra, or recite an inspiring poem in times of duress.
3 Exercise
Everyone knows that exercise is good for the body and can releive stress. So try to engage in a workout, run or stretching/yoga session when you are stressed. Stretching is a good way to releive the body of stress and you do not need to break a sweat to do it. Stretchimg also increases flexibility and is a prime factor in keeping aging bodies fit and free from disability. The next time you feel stressed or there is a tough deadline. Give yourself a quick break, and instead of grabbing a snack from the vending machine or , try doing 5-10 minutes of therapeutic stretching and deep breathing
4. Increase Touch
This is a big one if you want to decrease negative hormones in the bloodstream and toxic stress. These negative markers cause disease, sickness and increases belly fat. Instead of pining away, find ways to increase touch into your everyday routine. From cuddling pets and hugging loved ones, to deep tissue massages and self soothing touches you can reduce stress. Touch has a powerful effect on the human psyche. It has a curative effect on the nervous system. Find ways to increase soothing, non-sexual touch and watch your state of mind improve.
Conclusion
Use these tips as you navigate the changing world around you. While you cannot know what will happen next, you can be prepared to face the day with grace under fire.
