"The Hadal Zone," by Annie Proulx
In the July 8th & 15th, 2024 issue of the New Yorker and read by the author on The Writer's Voice (online for subscribers)
Several thousand words?
I was interested throughout this story, but what got my attention most was Arwen's callousness towards a stranger. It makes him seem almost hopeless as a human being, and I get the same feeling from the way he dismisses his wife at the end. It's possible I'm not being fair to the guy. I see this as a story about failure to make human connections.
