"Unity in essentials, liberty in the rest, and brotherly love."
Barthold George Niebuhr, Letter to Madame Hensler (March 27, 1818)*
I the other day quoted the early-nineteenth-century German historian Barthold George Niebuhr and have since burrowed more deeply into the correspondence of this interesting and attractive man. Niebuhr (1776-1831) is today remembered as the author of The Roman History (three vols., 1811-1832), as well as of various important advances in the historian's craft, but there was naturally much more to the man than this. Niebuhr was the Prussian ambassador to Rome, a German nationalist, a counter-revolutionary, and a Christian.
