The Maryland Department of Health launched the Maryland Overdose Data Dashboard (the "Dashboard"). This new tool replaces the previous one at StopOverdose.maryland.gov, offering user-friendly visualizations of statewide overdose trends.
The Dashboard will include four main features: unified data, timely data updates, historical trend analysis, and demographic insights. Features such as unified data combine data on fatal and non-fatal overdoses that can be searched by zip code. Additionally, timely updates will include the latest data and reduce the release period from 90 days to 30. Furthermore, the Dashboard also offers historical trend analysis at the jurisdictional level and demographic insights across age, race, and gender for targeted responses. By providing targeted, timely, and comprehensive data, it empowers counties to make informed decisions, allocate resources effectively, and ultimately save lives.
From the press release:
"For a targeted approach in the fight against this epidemic, we need data and the Maryland overdose dashboard will increase the ability of our partners across the state to reach communities most affected and connect people to the care they so desperately deserve." – Lt. Governor Miller
Initial data shows a promising trend: fatal overdoses in Maryland have been on the decline. In 2023, there were 2,513 fatal overdoses, marking a 2.5 percent decrease from the previous year. The latest data indicates that this decrease is continuing in 2024. By leveraging the dashboard, counties can contribute to and accelerate this positive trend. The Dashboard will help give counties the data and trends needed to enhance their public health strategies, reduce overdose rates, and improve the well-being of their communities.
