The 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris, France, with opening ceremonies starting July 26. This year an athlete from Maryland is joining as the youngest U.S. male track and field athlete to ever compete at the Olympics.
Quincy Wilson, from Prince George's County earned his spot in the 2024 Olympics at only 16 years old. He is a rising junior at Bullis School in Bowie and is from Potomac, Maryland. Wilson will be the youngest American male to be part of the Olympic track team.
During the U.S. Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon, on June 24, Wilson competed in the 400-meter race. En route to the race, he broke the world's under-18 400-meter record twice. He surpassed his own record in the semifinal on June 23, having already broken it two days earlier.
Bill Mallon, an Olympics historian, told CBS News that Wilson is the youngest male track Olympian to make the U.S. team. The youngest ever track and field American athlete is Esther Stroy, who competed at the age of 15 in the 1968 Olympics, Mallon told CBS News.
Maryland will see several athletes representing the state at the 2024 Olympics. The full list is still being updated, but see the, "Meet the DC-area athletes who've qualified for the Paris Olympics," for current standings.
As the 2024 Paris Olympics approach, Maryland can take pride in the incredible athletes representing the state. From swimming to track and field, these Olympians embody the dedication, resilience, and competitive spirit that define Maryland sports. - Eye on Annapolis
