It's one thing to talk about emergency preparedness, and another to actually execute it. One recent incident makes it whistle clear for me.
Hurricane Beryl struck Texas roughly two weeks ago, causing widespread devastation to lives and properties. A short moment after I texted my friend in Houton, the electricity went out at my house. I live on the East Coast, nowhere near the hurricane path. Nevertheless, it happens - a down tree or a powerline from an afternoon summer storm is not unheard of.
There I was, scrambling to round up whatever flashlights and batteries I could put my hands on before the fading daylight ran out. Most of the creature comforts I rely on, like heating water, require electricity, and they were NOT available. Fortunately, my mobile phone was working, and I was able to report the power outage to the local utility company.
Other than those, my dynamo emergency AM/FM radio equipped with a flashlight sat idle as I kept thinking about what more I could have done. Before I completed my list, the power was restored. So, I dodged a bullet. However, the list serves as a reminder of what I need to prepare before the next incident hits.
Do you agree knowing and doing are not the same thing?
