TRAVERSE CITY — In 2020, Sarah Lee Sullivan moved to northern Michigan from Maine. The East Coast native attended her first National Cherry Festival in 2021 and is currently in her third year as a volunteer.
This year, she is a first-time co-director of the Bayside Music Stage- Front of the House. Lee Sullivan said this involves checking identification so attendees may enter the concert venue.
Additionally, she worked as a ticket taker, gate and crowd controller and upper deck organizer during the air show. This flight deck event was sold out at Clinch Park on Saturday and Sunday.
In the past, she worked in the Cherry Dollars area, whether selling them or assisting other volunteers. Cherry Dollars can be purchased and then exchanged for beverages in the beer tent.
"I always had some involvement with the concert piece," she said. "That's my favorite part of the Cherry Festival: the concerts."
She said she is looking forward to hearing the comedy shows and seeing the local artists. Joshua Davis and The Accidentals will perform on July 6 to close out the 98th annual festival.
She said her friends Ken and Carol Crawford recruited her to join their team at the stage. Plus, her work moved remote during the COVID-19 pandemic, so she is able to volunteer more easily.
"They're a great group of people to work with," she said. "It's fun to be around a group of people who are happy . . . it's all around good vibes. This is one of the activities that really speaks to my love of the community."
Lee Sullivan runs her company Sullivan Business Services and co-owns Solitude Float and Wellness Spa with Andy Marek. She is the treasurer for the Generations Ahead board, a member of the Traverse City Noon Rotary Club and also assists with other Festival Foundation events like the Iceman.
