I read a post recently that insisted that to waste one's actions on something useless is worse than not doing anything at all. But I've also seen any number of other people stating that sometimes you just have to do anything until you finally get past whatever's blocking you and that even seemingly useless stuff has a purpose. So the real answer is probably a balance of both, plus some healthy nuance.
