John 14:16-17 CSB – And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn't see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.
Every day, I have questions directed to God in my prayer time. What do I do today? What doors do I walk through? Who can I minister to? What can I do to serve you, Lord? These are just some examples of what I ask of God in my prayer time. They're not all the same, but they do deal with the same subject matter. Namely, I need some direction and guidance, Lord.
But aren't we all seeking someone to guide us? I am convinced that, often, the difference between those who may be very smart yet make poor decisions is based in their failure to seek wise counsel.
A smart man who has a tax question speaks to a C.P.A. A foolish man looks up his tax issues on Google. A smart man, if he has a legal question about property, seeks out the advice of a real estate attorney. A foolish person talks to his neighbor who seems to know everything about buying and selling houses.
There are many examples we could describe about the difference in outcome for those who seek wise counsel before they make their footprints forward and those who don't. It's not based upon desire to follow God, but it's often based upon the foolishness of not having somebody to direct your steps.
It's so easy to forget that we have been provided someone to guide us as a counselor and an advocate. Christ refers to Him as the Spirit of Truth. He is the counselor who has been given to us, who Christ promises will be with us forever.
The world thinks that such examples in the life of a believer are foolish. They border on being schizophrenic. Listening to voices that don't really exist. Possibly even talking to one's self.
But for us as believers, we know that living in the Spirit of Truth is the only way to accomplish what Christ says in the immediate proceeding verse. In verse 15, we read Christ saying, "If you love me, you will keep my commands." It is then that Christ declares that He will ask the Father to give us another counselor to be with us forever and that He is the Spirit of Truth.

Today, ask yourself are you living and walking with your counselor and guide, or are you simply walking like everyone else. It is true, each day is a new day. And that is no different for us as believers. Each day we get up in the morning, we pray, and we choose to listen and follow the Spirit of Truth.
So why do we keep the Words of Christ? Because we love Him.
Stay healthy and have a blessed day!
