The Hindu Editorial Analysis

We understand the significance of reading The Hindu newspaper for enhancing reading skills, improving comprehension of passages, staying informed about current events, enhancing essay writing, and more, especially for banking aspirants who need to focus on editorials for vocabulary building. This article will delve into today's editorial points along with practice questions and key vocabulary.

CBI arrests two in Patna for leak of NEET paper

The accused allegedly rented a play school to distribute leaked exam papers to candidates the night before the exam. The CBI questioned the principal of Oasis School in Hazaribagh and found a possible link between the NEET and UGC-NET leaks. The CBI discovered that the school was a center for both the NEET-UG exam on May 5 and the UGC-NET exam on June 18.

  • In its first arrests related to the NEET-UG paper leak case in Patna, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took two individuals into custody on Thursday. According to the agency, the accused, Manish Prakash and Ashutosh Kumar, were instrumental in arranging the rental of the Learn Boys Hostel and Play School in Patna's Khemnichak area, where the leaked question papers were allegedly distributed to candidates the night before the exam.
  • On Thursday, the CBI also took custody of Baldev Kumar, alias Chintu, and Mukesh Kumar, two individuals previously arrested by the Bihar Police's Economic Affairs Unit, which was initially investigating the case. The CBI brought them to its office in Patna for questioning following a medical check-up. A special CBI court had granted custody of these individuals to the CBI until July 4.
  • The CBI continued its thorough interrogation of Oasis School principal Ahsanul Haque in Hazaribagh for the second day in a row. The agency has detained seven individuals in Hazaribagh, including the principal.
  • During questioning, the CBI discovered that Oasis School had served as an examination center for both the NEET-UG exam on May 5 and the UGC-NET exam on June 18. With Oasis School already under scrutiny for the NEET paper leak, agency sources questioned how the NTA had selected it as a center for the UGC-NET exam as well. On Wednesday, the CBI also interrogated officials from SBI bank and the courier company tasked with transporting the NEET question papers.
  • Three days ago, during a conversation with The Hindu, Mr. Haque acknowledged that the box and envelope containing the NEET question papers had been tampered with. He explained that the digital lock, which was supposed to open automatically at 1:15 p.m., failed to do so, leading them to use a cutter to open the outer box.

Uttarakhand government to assess the risk of thirteen glacial lakes during the monsoon

  • As the monsoon arrives, the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Department (USDMA) will initiate a vulnerability assessment of 13 glacial lakes, five of which are classified as being in a "high-risk zone," beginning in July. The study aims to provide data to help prevent calamities such as lake outbursts.
  • Ranjit Sinha, Secretary of the USDMA, updated reporters on recently identified lakes discovered via satellite earlier this year. He highlighted the vulnerability of Himalayan glaciers to climate change and emphasized the need for ongoing monitoring to ensure safety.
  • The lakes in Darma, Lasaryanghati, and the Kutiyangti Valley in Pithoragarh district, along with the Vasudhara Tal lake in the Dhauli Ganga basin of Chamoli district, are identified as high-risk areas. These lakes, ranging in size from 0.02 sq. km to 0.5 sq. km, are located at elevations of 4,000 meters above sea level.
  • Earlier this month, the USDMA requested the Indo-Tibetan Border Police to provide a report on the status of the five high-risk glacial lakes. "After assessing the risk, we will install pipes inside the lakes to mitigate potential hazards," he explained.
  • In March, the State government established two expert teams to evaluate the risks associated with these glacial lakes. The teams comprised experts from the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, the Geological Survey of India, the National Institute of Hydrology in Roorkee, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology.
  • In the past decade, Uttarakhand experienced two significant glacial lake outburst floods. The first occurred in the Kedarnath valley in June 2013, resulting in 6,000 fatalities. The second occurred in the Rishiganga Valley in Chamoli in February 2021, leading to the loss of 72 lives.

India and U.S. in talks for Stryker infantry vehicles

Progress is being made on deals for MQ-9B unmanned aerial vehicles and GE-414 jet engines, along with defense industrial collaborations under the Critical and Emerging Technology initiative.

  • India has shown interest in co-producing Stryker infantry vehicles and is in the initial stages of discussions with the U.S. regarding both the Stryker and the Javelin anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM), according to U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt M. Campbell.
  • Simultaneously, progress is being made on agreements for MQ-9B unmanned aerial vehicles and GE-414 jet engines, in addition to defense industrial collaborations under the Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) framework.
  • Discussions on the Stryker have been ongoing for several months now, and officials indicated that the deal could potentially involve local manufacturing of several hundred vehicle variants under license, with some customizations tailored for the Indian Army, including versions equipped with Javelin missiles. However, several defense officials have reservations about opting for the Stryker, noting that Indian companies have recently developed and demonstrated several similar vehicles.
  • "India has shown interest in co-producing the Stryker, and we are still in the initial stages. The U.S. Army intends to showcase the capabilities of the Stryker to the Indian Army at an early opportunity," Mr. Campbell commented.
  • In the past, the U.S. has showcased both the Stryker and Javelin systems to the Indian Army during bilateral exercises. The Indian Army extensively evaluated the Javelin, but the deal did not materialize. Regarding the MQ-9B deal, Mr. Campbell noted that the letter of offer and acceptance was sent to India in early March, and they are awaiting the signature to proceed further.
  • The deal is nearing completion and is expected to undergo approval by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in the coming months. Similarly, the agreement for the licensed manufacture of GE-414 engines by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) to process of powering the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Mk1A is also progressing towards the final stages..

  4. What are the key considerations expressed by Indian defense officials regarding the potential co-production of Stryker vehicles despite ongoing discussions with the U.S.?
  5. How does the progress on the MQ-9B deal highlight the current status of defense collaborations under India's Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) initiative with the United States?
