Distraction is a fact of life. Its source does not have to be external. Our mind does a fair amount of distracting itself. We distract ourselves from being bored is a case in point. Thus, distraction can be productive if managed properly. Really?
Distraction creates a tension that coerces us to stay on our goals, sharpens our concentration, and tests our resolve. We can become disciplined and better persons as a result. That's why we have opponents in sports - to challenge us to hone our skills.
Therefore, it stands to reason that blocking out distraction is not necessarily the best approach. That's not only frustrating but also potentially counterproductive. I recommend: instead of pushing it away, be aware of the distraction, acknowledge it, and leverage it to stay on course.
Like many people, I get lots of unsolicted emails. Sure, they are distracting me from the emails I do want, but I have choices. First, I block the Spam using filters. Next, I skim the sender & subject lines to sort out the important from the urgent ones and send others to trash.
Not saying mine method is perfect, but it helps me to manage my in-box. I use a similar approach for meditation. Besides focusing on breathe-in & -out, I acknowle any distraction (instead of fighting it). and then return to my breath. So I can stay calm and relaxed.
