Micoud North MP Jeremiah Norbert has defended the significance of last week's official opening of a $1.2 million jetty and washroom facility in his constituency.
Norbert noted attempts to reduce the moment's significance on his Facebook page.
"These attempts are present because these individuals have never felt the plight of our fisherfolk, who cannot make a proper living and take care of their families because of the absence of the jetty. They don't get the physical and financial pain of having to walk through the sargassum to get to their boats, only for individuals to not purchase the fish. But, who feels it knows it," he declared.
Fisherfolk testimonials accompanied the Facebook post, with one fisherman declaring that the new jetty represented a game changer.
Complete Marine Services built the 192-foot-long 'T' jetty.
Before its construction, fishermen had complained that when they came from fishing late at night, they had to enter the cold waters and navigate their way through the sargassum.
In addition, they lamented that they could not secure their boats properly.
Norbert asserted that the fisherfolk had experienced pain and agony.
He also urged people to listen to the voices of individuals who had been affected and not those who had promised and could not deliver because they were more concerned about providing resources to the 'elite class'.
