I can't even begin to tell you what a horrible trend this is. Mind-bogglingly horrible. Renting is always worse than owning, always. For most people, owing a home is the one and only non-stupid investment they'll make in their lifetimes.
There is a growing slave class in America, and it shows - from the passive compliance to every stupid thing thrown at them, to their voting patterns, to the obscene spending habits, it's a zombie class. And it's growing. Now it's an economic model unto itself. And it's a complete disaster.
The societal pollution that'll come from this will be breathtaking. Even people who own small, simple houses will be so far ahead of the non-ownership class it'll look like two completely different societies. Because it will be - people who own property and save vs people who post travel pics on IG on their way to bankruptcy (which these days really is indentured servitude).
To say "this is not going to go well" is a huge understatement.
