Yesterday's sermon was an exhortation and instruction on reading the Bible.
Briefly, the reasons people don't read their Bible were discussed, with the understanding that scripture can be confusing or difficult to relate to.
Song of Songs 7:4 KJV — Thy neck is as a tower of ivory; thine eyes like the fishpools in Heshbon, by the gate of Bathrabbim: thy nose is as the tower of Lebanon which looketh toward Damascus.
"Husbands, try telling your wife her nose is like a tower some time."
Laughter sprinkled the room as husband's and wives thought about how that would go over.
The majority of the sermon was breaking down the method for studying the scriptures by using only the scriptures as reference.
Throughout, the theme was read the Bible.
For it is useless to know how to study the scriptures if one does not actually read them.
He also pointed out that it is ludacris to expect to be spiritually healthy if one is eating only half an hour once a week.
Yet, that is what's occurring for those who are not reading the Word, but rather expecting their Sunday morning to sustain them for the next seven days.
No one would expect to be healthy and strong if they were nourishing their bodies this way.
Nor should anyone expect to be spiritually healthy if they're not partaking of God's Word regularly and often.
Romans 10:17 KJV — So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
It is through the Word of God faith grows.
It is in the scriptures truth and the path to eternal life are found.
1 Corinthians 15:1-4 NIV
[1] Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. [2] By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. [3] For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, [4] that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
It contains the instruction, direction, warning, and prophecy that those who put their trust in the Lord Jesus might have both eternal life after this, but also understanding for the day-to-day.
Truly, it is the Word of God which God's Spirit used to comfort, encourage, and convict.
Hebrews 4:12 KJV — For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank You for Your Word. Thank You for Your blessings which are daily available through Your scriptures. Lord Jesus, I am so grateful for the Bible. Please continue to remind me of the priority reading my Bible must be in my day. Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness. Lord, I lift up those who are in danger if they read or own a copy of Your Word. I humbly request You continue to provide and protect those who are working to follow You at great personal risk. Lord, please continue to supply all their needs. Lord, for those of us who have Your Word readily available, please help us to treasure it and to not allow busyness to crowd out time with You. Lord, I want to be spiritually healthy and strong. Thank You for the sermon yesterday which reminded me of the importance of reading my Bible. Lord, I love You. Thank You for first loving me. Amen.
