Eastvale – On Friday. May 10, at the start of Mother's Day weekend, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, Jurupa Valley Station, conducted a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and Driver's License checkpoint. Six people were arrested and 15 Field Sobriety Tests (FSTs) were conducted.
The checkpoint took place between 7 PM and 3 AM on Schleisman Road and Archibald Avenue. After 1,313 vehicles were screened, four people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and two were arrested for driving with a suspended driver's license. A total of 14 citations were issued for driving without a driver's license and six vehicles were stored or impounded.
"DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes," stated a Riverside County Sheriff's news release. "The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads."
"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," Sergeant Ignacio Robles said. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety."
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. "Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving," stated the release. "While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal."
First-time DUI drivers face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
