The President of Saint Lucia's Trade Union Federation (TUF) has expressed concern over workplace violence and harassment, especially targeting women.
Julian Monrose spoke on the Federation's behalf at Monday's launch of activities to observe May Day.
Monrose observed that this year's theme highlights the importance of social justice and decent work.
"We cannot speak of decent work if we don't address issues of harassment and violence both within the private sector and the public sector," the TUF president declared.
Monrose emphasised the need to address the matter, especially regarding the treatment of female workers.
"In some work environments, women are virtually treated as second-class citizens, and that cannot be tolerated," Monrose stated.
He said it was time for the government to ratify the International Labour Organization's Violence and Harassment Convention No. 190.
The convention recognises the right of everyone to a world of work free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence and harassment.
Governments that ratify the convention must enact the necessary laws and policy measures to prevent and address workplace violence and harassment.
The TUF President recalled calling last year for the convention's ratification.
" If we want to have a tri-partite meeting to discuss Convention 190 and its implications, let us do that, but let us ratify that very important convention," Monrose stated.
