Today, US Citizens are required to file their income tax returns for federal, state, and city taxes. The post office will be busy for those paper filers. Thanks to electronics many can file online. This makes me wonder if the volume with the post office has lowered. When I owe taxes I send in a check on a paper return since I prefer not to have the money deducted from my account. However, when I get a refund I am more than willing to provide my account number because the refund arrives faster. As I type this it gives me pause why I do that.
Every year I dread preparing my return. It takes time out of my schedule to put the information from my records into Turbo Tax then file the return. I literally have to put a day on the calendar to do it otherwise I will be frantic if it gets too late for my comfort. I prepare the return as early as my documents arrive to determine if I owe or will get a refund. If I owe, than I have plenty of months to pay. God always provides a way for me to pay the taxes I owe.
Paying taxes is a government obligation to fund programs and services we enjoy. I don't like having a portion of my earnings given out, but the law says I must and Jesus says I must:
Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor. So the spies questioned him: "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"
He saw through their duplicity and said to them, "Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?"
"Caesar's," they replied.
He said to them, "Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."
They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent. Luke 20:20-26 (NIV)
So, how are we meeting our tax obligations? Monday's Emissions From The Heart also has a short video about this wonderful day.
