Splitting her time between the cooler climate of majestic Copenhagen and the warmer weather on Australia's scenic Central Coast, Tina Madsen-Walcott, Founder of Tina M Copenhagen has created a beautiful life where she gets to enjoy both countries with family in both. We find out what she loves about Copenhagen and what it means to her.
Tell us about Copenhagen and why it's so special to you.
Copenhagen is a very old city with the most beautiful architecture and buildings, wonderfully as beautiful today as they were when they were first built with some buildings dating back to the 1600's. The city is full of cobblestoned streets separated by canals.
As you walk next to the canals you will pass very interesting clothing shops, art dealers and cute cafes. Nesting to the side of the canals are many houseboats and a myriad of smaller boats. Copenhagen is a city with a heartbeat which combines old world charm combined with modern Danish architecture. It is to me, a very special place.
Where are your favourite places to eat and shop?
My favourite places to shop would definitely be the back streets in Copenhagen. If you are game to venture off the main shopping street called Strøget and start exploring these back streets, you will find the most interesting shops. During my last trip with my girlfriend, we managed to chat with many of the shop owners. Hearing their stories was so fascinating. Many had been in the same shop for decades.
How would you spend a perfect day in Copenhagen?
I would wake up and have a coffee and of course some Danish pastries. You absolutely have to visit a Danish bakery when you are in Copenhagen. Then I would take the metro to the centre of Copenhagen where I would walk along the canals through the city and just admire the buildings and the life of the people. There is always so much going on. Most people get around the city on bikes. I really miss bike riding, living in Australia, but I try to make up for this when I am in Denmark. I would meet a friend for lunch or dinner. I truly enjoy eating at a place called NYHAVN, it is a pocket of restaurants along the canal. This restaurant district is so old, dating back to the 1600-1800's. All the buildings are colourful and so beautiful. They serve a lot of traditional Danish food which I love. You could finish your day with a visit to Tivoli the oldest amusement park in the world. Again, the Tivoli has been kept in such beautiful condition, with its old buildings and the most stunning floral displays.

What is your favourite thing about your town?
My favourite thing about Copenhagen would probably be the bike riding. I just love it. The city is mostly flat and well laid out. Most streets have a separate lane for the bikes, although you do have to be careful and you are advised to wear a helmet. Denmark is a small country and in the cities it is very easy to get from A to B on your bike. In summer I LOVE that it does not get dark before 11pm in the evening. It is amazing and make the days so long and extra enjoyable.
Any other local insider secrets we should know about?
I would recommend the following things to do in Copenhagen:
- Visit Amalienborg, Queen Mary's castle. Part of it is open for the public.
- Tour the canals by boat. You can rent your own boat or join a bigger boat tour. These tours give a good insight into the history of the city.
- Visit Round Tower built in the 17th century. At the top, you will have an amazing view of the city.
- Tour Rosenberg Renaissance castle. It contains the Crown Jewels which can only be worn by the Queen.
- Check out Christiania, Copenhagen's free town.
- Lastly you must try the Danish classic dishes; the Smørrebrød (a Danish open sandwich) and grab a HOTDOG from one of the small hotdog vans dotted around the city.
