Maryland Health Benefits Exchange is seeing substantial increases in enrollment with a few months left of Medicaid redeterminations by the Maryland Department of Health.
A Maryland Matters article shared an update on the state of Medicaid redeterminations in Maryland. As previously covered on Conduit Street, the unwinding process began in the Spring of 2023 following the expiration of the pandemic emergency policy which required the automatic renewal of existing Medicaid recipients. The end of this pandemic-era policy triggered the redetermination process for individuals who need to re-enroll if they are eligible or purchase coverage through an alternative source, including the Maryland Health Benefits Exchange.
Local county health departments are a primary resource for residents looking for help navigating this transition, and according to state officials it's been a big shift. The state reported a 375 percent increase of individuals no longer eligible for Medicaid signing up for plans through the state exchange. State officials expect similar growth to continue through May as redeterminations come to a close.
According to the most recent report from the Maryland Department of Health, the state has issued over 1.2 million Medicaid redeterminations from April 2023 through early 2024. As of January 2024 the system was recognizing 1.6M enrollees, down about 1.5M from the previous winter.
