So The year 2024 sees PAYE reaching 80 years old
PAYE (Pay As You Earn) was introduced into the United Kingdom in 1944, a scheme devised by Sir Paul Chambers.
The introduction of PAYE followed trials held in 1940 & 1941.
Following the Second World War, as with other nations around the works, the financial strains placed great pressures on the United Kingdom, and the Treasury needed to urgently collect more tax from a wider group of working citizens, many who had never previously had any involvement with tax.
Now it feels like we all have to pay income tax from our pay packet (whether still in paper form or electronic). And pensioners too.
The operation has changed over many years with devolved measures being available to the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly. the administration remains with HM Revenue and Customs, originally referred for many years as the Inland Revenue.
