Day Seven – Postcard

April 7

This might be my favorite prompt ever! We were asked to play with the idea of "Wish You Were Here." I have so many of these moments in my life and it's a beautiful thing to have. I have these moments so often, I've started collecting postcards and writing them to my future self. Don't worry, I also buy postcards and mail them to Grandma and my parents. For this prompt, I was immediately transported to January when we stepped off the train in Oban, Scotland. I can still feel a bit of that moment even now, but more what I feel is the longing when we left. I loved that town and my goodness, I fell head over heels for Scotland. If it weren't for the lack of skiing, I would move there in a heartbeat (and no, I'm not being an American saying that just because). It was a life changing trip and I can't wait to go back and visit our friends, explore more, and make more memories. I ended this in a way to include the inspiration phrase and realized, I was writing it to my parents, but also my grandparents. We're Irish and I always wanted to go with my Grandpa... sadly, that trip never happened. I know that when I visit there, I'll be writing lots of mental postcards to him.

Today, we were greeted by the ocean kissing the sand
Soft gull calls plating like background music
As we took in the colorful building
Curving around the waters edge
And climbing the steep hill above.

Our flat was up the incline
Where our roller bags suddenly felt like cement blocks
Although the clicked happily along the pavement.
Why I was so winded after years of climbing mountains
Escapes me entirely…
Perhaps it's the fresh Scottish air.

The sky began to turn from the only blue we've seen
To peach and mauve almost instantly
So we ran to the old tower grounds
Where we found a new four-legged friend
And caught the most magnificent sunset.

I really really
Wish you were here
Experiencing all of this beside us
The food, the people, the culture.
It might not be ours technically
But I think I found a new kind of home here.
