Day 16
Today, we challenge you to write a poem in which you closely describe an object or place, and then end with a much more abstract line that doesn't seemingly have anything to do with that object or place, but which, of course, really does. The "surprise" ending to this James Wright poem is a good illustration of the effect we're hoping you'll achieve. An abstract, philosophical kind of statement closing out a poem that is otherwise intensely focused on physical, sensory details
'Welcome!' smile the greetings
in joyful amber glowing;
behind, a broad escalier glides away
into balustrades parading
smoothly carved limbs
of warm marble.
Just as all colours become white,
so, brilliantly iridescent bright
breathed a universe of beauty and music
into simplicity of being.
Graciously invited to glimpse into my own space
created generously to accommodate
and celebrate
all that is me.
I gaze at the lavishness
of a dream I never dared
yet long to explore.
It was home;
and one day
I'll come to stay
for-ever-more.
