2 Samuel 16: 9-12: Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, "Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Please, let me go over and take off his head!" But the king said, "What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? So let him curse, because the Lord has said to him, 'Curse David.' Who then shall say, 'Why have you done so?'" And David said to Abishai and all his servants, "See how my son who came from my own body seeks my life. How much more now may this Benjamite? Let him alone, and let him curse; for so the Lord has ordered him. It may be that the Lord will look on my affliction and that the Lord will repay me with good for his cursing this day."
Thought: How do you overcome the curse of words or How do you break free from the curse of words in your life?
Reflection: Is your speech cursing someone?
The curse of words includes words spoken by others (or even by yourself) that are intended to inflict harm or damage or belittle a person, or to wish evil upon them.
Consider the example of David, He was cursed and belittled by Shimei, (2 Samuel 16). Shimei falsely accused David, attributing David's circumstances and the loss of his kingdom to God's judgment for alleged past sins against the house of Saul. Shimei's words hurt! False accusations are lies. Lies are like rotting garbage - you cannot avoid the smell even when the garbage is hidden.
What are the words that have been spoken to you that have wounded or "cursed" you, undeservedly? "You're so clumsy... You'll never amount to anything... You'll never change... You're going to be just like {fill in the blank}... You'll never find anyone to love you... I wish you were {fill in the blank}... I wish you'd never been ... You always... You never... I hate…" etc.
Being a child of God doesn't make you immune to others' cursing. The key is how you respond to these wounds. There are two possible responses:
1. To curse back (See v. 9, above). Using the same types of words does not change anything. You feel emotionally
charged, but not soothed or healed from the initial hurt.
2. Respond humbly, and receive the curse -- as from the Lord (vv. 10-12 above). Pray to the Lord for help because He
sees and knows every next step - you do not.
How will you respond? What do you want as a release from this curse of words?
Prayer: Father God who is in heaven, the curse of words has had a big impact on me and on my life. Show me how to break free of this curse. Help me first to break free from cursing. Help me to stop using the same words that hurt me. Heal me from the effects of being cursed at, cursed over, and cursed in thought word and deed because of those hurtful cursing words. Lord, I long to be free of this curse of words and to be forever under your grace. You said Your truth would make me free. .The truth is Jesus is the one who can reverse, restore, and help me recover from this curse of words. I pray and give thanks in the name of the one who never curse me, Christ Jesus, Amen.
The next 5 days will provide a series of prayers and power verses to help you Break Free.
